Some of my recent projects include a curatorial project with Bangalore-based artist Abhishek Hazra for West Space, and a column about art and books for Runway journal. From 2016 until 2017 I was the Writer and Editor of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale based in Kerala, India. Among other things I wrote and edited the Biennale’s guide, catalogue and a short children’s book titled, Kutti’s Night at the Biennale. My current research is, in a broad sense, interested in the discourses of postcolonialism and decolonisation as they manifest in, and are related to, contemporary art of India.
In 2016 I presented a series of radio plays for the Next Wave Festival, and was one of six artists taking part in the Biennale of Sydney’s experimental writing project, The Bureau of Writing. Both of these projects have been incorporated into an ongoing project called On the Beach, a podcast that focuses on the convergence of critical and creative discourses surrounding contemporary art.
I was Program Curator at West Space in Melbourne from 2009 until 2013, and co-founder and co-editor (with Rowan McNaught) of their online publication the West Space Journal until 2015. One of my favourite projects that Rowan and I did with West Space Journal was the Wikimemory Multifunction Palace for Gertrude Contemporary. Over my time at West Space I curated exhibitions including History is our audience with Craig Burgess, Marcia Jane, Taree Mackenzie, Ronen Becker, David Chesworth, Dirk de Bruyn and John Nixon; Ode to form featuring Jeremy Bakker, Belle Bassin, David Capra, Helen Johnson, Veronica Kent, Sanné Mestrom and Jake Walker; and, The Nothing with Damiano Bertoli, Louise Hubbard, Sanné Mestrom, Deborah Ostrow, Daniel Price, Matthew Shannon and Jackson Slattery. I also worked on many projects with then West Space Director, Phip Murray including Today Your Love and Time Has Come Today, two special seasons of experimental live art, audiovisual and performance.
For many years I lived in Melbourne where I worked with organisations including Monash University Museum of Art, MPavilion, Next Wave, un Magazine, and Melbourne Fringe. I was a Team Leader of the Australian Pavilion at Venice Biennale in 2017; was a Research Assistant for the Talking Points report commissioned by Australia Council for the Arts; have lectured in Art History at La Trobe University ; and, was the 2014 London Arts Writers Resident at ACME Studios. I have received professional grants and awards from the City of Melbourne, Creative Victoria and the Australia Council for the Arts.
In 2016 I received a first-class Master of Arts (Art History) from the University of Melbourne. My thesis examined the production and presentation of experimental music, art, performance and installation by a group of musicians, visual artists, writers, performers and film makers who were involved in the activities taking place at the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre, Melbourne from 1976 until 1984.
